Let’s talk hydration.

Even on short hikes, it’s important to bring plenty of water so that you don’t get dehydrated. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen people on hot, sunny days with one tiny water bottle between them or *gasp* no water at all. It’s extremely dangerous!

A good rule of thumb is that you’ll drink about a half litre of water per hour of moderate activity in moderate temperatures. Be prepared to drink more in hot weather.

📌 Save these hydration tips 📌

Since I’m a little crazy about water, I almost always bring 3L in my @hydrapak PLUS a water filter PLUS electrolytes. I’d rather be over prepared than under.

Why electrolytes? Isn’t plain ol’ water enough?

Before we get into it, let’s back up a sec. What exactly are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that help your body function properly and when you sweat, you sweat them (and water) out. They help fight dehydration and muscle cramping, while keeping you extra hydrated!

In the case of this @nuunhydration tablet, the minerals are potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium.

You don’t always need to replenish your electrolytes while hiking. If you’re sweating a lot or out for a long time, that’s when it’s helpful to pop a tablet into your bottle and sip away.

If you’ve never tried an electrolyte tablet before, give it a try on your next strenuous hike and see how you feel compared to regular water!

Tip: I recommend a separate bottle for electrolytes so that you still have regular water – electrolytes are helpful, but most mixes have a flavour and I personally wouldn’t want that to be my only water source.

We’re heading to the Kootenays! 🎉

For our first trip of the year, we’re going to take a road trip through the Kootenays. It’s such a beautiful area of BC that we’ve always wanted to explore more – there’s so much hiking and awesome outdoor activities!

And it’s super laid back and relaxing which is something both Jacob and I really need these days.

Since we both grew up in the Okanagan, we’ve been to the Kootenays many times throughout the years. But we’ve never taken a road trip to see all the awesome sights and we’re so excited to check out everything we possibly can!

Adjustable grip hitch knot 🪢

Knot tying is a super useful skill for around camp and hiking!

My knots tying skills have always been pretty terrible — look around my camp and you’ll see a balled mess that’s supposed to be a knot. I figured it was time to learn and take you along for the ride!

The adjustable grip hitch is a simple knot and is often used for adjusting tension on tent pegs, tarps, and hammocks. It can easily slide up and down the rope, but stays locked when you apply weight/tension.

It’s a good knot to have in your back pocket!
