And let’s not forget the bikers; with trails that weave through lush forests and overlook the stunning coastline, your ride will be anything but ordinary.

It’s not just about the physical activities either; you can go golfing with a view, sail into the sunset, and enjoy local ciders.

If you want an adventure in British Columbia, exploring the Gulf Islands is an absolute must!

Camping on the Gulf Islands

While there are plenty of hotels and lodges located across the Gulf Islands, if you want to feel closer to the stunning natural areas the islands are known for, you should definitely go camping!

You can check into a campsite or try some wild camping if you’re feeling a bit more daring. Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of waves lapping on the shore or the calm rustle of leaves in a dense, forested site — this is camping in the Gulf Islands.

Whether you opt for a beachfront site where the ocean is your backyard or a secluded spot surrounded by towering fir and cedar trees, the Gulf Islands have something for every camper.

Camping Options

  • Pender Island camping is very popular! This island has really incredible nature and many sites with incredible viewpoints.
  • Salt Spring Island may be better if you want to be closer to civilization. This is the most populous island and you’ll have more restaurants and shops on your doorstep.

Wildlife & Natural Surroundings

It’s not just the stunning locations that make camping here an adventure; it’s also the wildlife encounters and the serenity of your natural surroundings.

Picture yourself sipping coffee as deer wander through your site in the early morning mist or listening to the calls of eagles overhead as you gather around the campfire. The Gulf Islands are full of these experiences.

I highly encourage you to explore both traditional camping and glamping across these islands. Whether you’re pitching a tent under the stars or indulging in a luxury glamping setup, the Gulf Islands promise a memorable stay that blends adventure with nature.

It’s time to pack your bags and set off for an ultimate adventure in one of the most enchanting destinations in British Columbia!

Hiking on the Gulf Islands

In my opinion, one of the best ways to explore the Gulf Islands is by hiking them! Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to stretch your legs, the islands offer trails for every hiker.

From leisurely strolls that let you soak in the scenic beauty at your own pace to more strenuous hikes that promise a challenge, there’s truly something for every type of explorer.

Hiking in the Gulf Islands is your ticket to experiencing the very best of British Columbia. The trails meander through forests that feel untouched and lead you to viewpoints with breathtaking views of the coastline where the vast Pacific Ocean meets rocky shores and sandy beaches.

As you catch your breath while the ocean stretches before you, you’ll truly understand the magic of hiking in the Gulf Islands.

Recommended Hikes

While you’ll find scenic trails on all of the islands, Galiano Island tends to be the most popular island for hiking.

  • Bodega Ridge Trail on Galiano offers some fantastic vistas and great wildlife spotting opportunities, while not being too challenging.
  • Galiano Island also has Mount Galiano which is definitely worth climbing on a clear day for the great view.

Preparing for Your Hikes

Before you set out on any hike, remember to pack essentials (and stop by REI or MEC if you’re missing some). Water and snacks are a must to keep your energy up through the climbs. And don’t forget your camera! There are so many beautiful landscapes and you’ll want to remember them all.

Biking on the Gulf Islands

If you want to get around the Gulf Islands a little faster, you can always rent a bike and cycle them. These islands offer an awesome biking for both casual cyclists and thrill-seekers looking for challenging terrains. The diversity of biking trails here is impressive!

Just imagine pedaling along scenic routes with uninterrupted views of the ocean and lush forests. If you’re lucky, you might even spot local wildlife!

Rent a Bike

Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your own bike, local shops dot the islands and offer bike rentals.

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride or a mountain bike challenge, the Gulf Islands have got you covered. They’ll provide everything you need to explore the islands on two wheels.

Where to Bike

Mayne Island is popular for cycling because it doesn’t have too much elevation and has a fairly short road network. Other islands can be a little more challenging, but are worthwhile for the incredible sights.

You can stick to the road if you want or explore various off-road paths on a mountain bike.

Kayaking the Gulf Islands

It’s also possible to explore the Gulf Islands from the water! Glide through the waters with the quiet splash of your paddle the only sound as you navigate the calm sea (with the exception of the wildlife). It’s such an amazing way to connect with BC!

Whether you’re a seasoned kayaker or just getting into paddling, the Gulf Islands cater to every skill level and have an adventure that’s just right for you.

Kayak Rentals & Tours

There are kayak rental companies based on many of the islands where you can rent a kayak and paddle around the coast. Get ready to explore British Columbia’s coast!

There are even multi-day kayak tours if you want to explore a few of the islands at once. With a guided tour, local experts will lead you to hidden coves and secret spots known only to the inhabitants of Vancouver, Victoria, and their surrounding isles.

Marine Wildlife

As you dip your paddle into the crystal-clear waters, keep your eyes peeled for the ocean’s playful residents – seals basking on the shores, curious sea lions, and if you’re truly lucky, a whale in the distance.

The Gulf Islands are a sanctuary for marine wildlife and offer you the chance to witness these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

Golfing on the Gulf Islands

With a variety of golf courses nestled on these idyllic islands, you’re in for a treat regardless of whether you’re a beginner or an advanced golfer.

The courses on the Gulf Islands are as diverse as they are picturesque. From challenging layouts that test your skill and precision to more forgiving fairways perfect for those just starting out, there’s something to suit every golfer.

Arbitus Ridge (overlooking the islands) and Pender Island Golf and Country Club are some of the top courses in British Columbia.

Some of these courses even have on-site accommodation! Alternatively, you can stay in a hotel or campsite nearby.

Sailing the Gulf Islands

Sailing is also popular in the Gulf Islands. You can take your own boat or charter a yacht for an opportunity to explore the islands from the water.

As you navigate through the archipelago, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of dense forests and rugged shorelines. You might even see marine wildlife on your journey — including seals, sea lions, otters and orcas! Head to Gabriola Island for the best sailing opportunities.

There are lots of places to anchor, from snug coves to well-equipped marinas. These spots are perfect for an overnight stay or a quick stop to explore the surrounding area.

If you’re new to sailing, the Gulf Islands are incredibly forgiving and the sheltered waters make learning to sail a joy rather than a challenge.

If you don’t want to captain the ship yourself, take a chartered tour through the most picturesque routes — soak in every moment without worrying about the logistics! These tours also give you the opportunity to explore uninhabited islands which have their own unique charm.

Whether you’re gliding past the majestic shores of Salt Spring Island or anchoring in the serene bays of Galiano Island, sailing in the Gulf Islands is an unforgettable British Columbia adventure!

Cider Tasting on the Gulf Islands

As you explore Vancouver, Victoria, and the hidden gems scattered across Gulf Islands, there’s one activity that you absolutely must-try if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture: cider tasting. Plus, it’s a great way to rest after being so busy!

The Gulf Islands are not just a place for nature lovers; they’re also home to booming cider scene. With many local orchards and cideries sprouting up across the islands, there’s an undeniable charm in discovering the unique blends.

There are many cider farms located in the Gulf Islands region that offer tastings and tours. I recommend dedicating a day (or two) to visiting a few of these cideries. It’s not just about the tasting; it’s about the experience!

You’ll quickly discover that each cidery has its own personality that reflects the unique character of the island it calls home. For an unforgettable experience, pair your cider tastings at Salt Spring Island (which is one of the most popular destinations for cider tasting) with local cuisine for a full Gulf Islands adventure.
