Things to Do on a Kelowna Airport Layover: YLW Travel Guide

So, you have a layover at the Kelowna airport, hey? Good news: a layover here is actually pretty awesome. Instead of spending hours sitting around the terminal, you could be sipping wine at a nearby winery, hiking to a waterfall, or even cuddling baby kangaroos within minutes of leaving the airport.

I’ve lived in Kelowna most of my life, so I know the area around the airport pretty well. And while the airport itself isn’t exactly in the middle of the action (are any of them, though?), there are actually quite a few fun things to do nearby if you have some time to kill before your next flight.

Whether you have a couple of hours or half a day, I’ve rounded up some of the best things to do near the Kelowna airport, including a few places you might not expect to find so close by.

And if you can swing it, extend that layover! Turning a quick stop into a full day (or even a night) gives you a lot more time to explore Kelowna and see why I love living here so much.

Just be careful. You might end up wanting to stay. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

How Long of a Layover Do You Need to Explore Kelowna?

First things first: how much can you actually do during a Kelowna airport layover? YLW is small and pretty easy to get in and out of, but you still need to factor in travel time, traffic, security, and boarding.

Here’s roughly what I’d recommend:

Layover Length	What I’d Do
Under 2 hours	Stay at YLW. Grab some food, try a local beer or Okanagan wine, and enjoy the new departures lounge.
2–3 hours	Stick VERY close to the airport. Check out the KF Centre for Excellence or grab something to eat nearby.
3–5 hours	You’ve got a little more freedom! Visit Kangaroo Creek Farm, hike Mill Creek, or head to Ancient Hill Winery or Upside Cidery.
5–7 hours	Now we’re talking. Head downtown, hike Knox Mountain, visit an East Kelowna winery, or spend some time by Okanagan Lake.
7+ hours	You’ve basically got yourself a mini Kelowna day trip. Pick a few things from this guide and go explore!

⚠️ These are only rough guidelines, and I’d always err on the side of caution. Kelowna traffic can be wildly unpredictable, especially during summer and rush hour, and you’ll need to go through security again when you return to YLW.

Luggage Storage at Kelowna Airport

YLW doesn’t have luggage storage, but you’re not completely out of luck! Bounce Luggage Storage has some luggage storage options around Kelowna where you can leave your bags for a few hours while you explore.

I’ve used luggage storage services like this all over the world, and they’re SO handy for long layovers. You basically drop your bags at a participating local business, head out and explore without dragging a suitcase around with you, then pick everything up before your flight.

Just keep in mind that options around the Kelowna airport are pretty limited (they’re really only downtown), so I’d check availability and book ahead of time if you know you’ll want to store your luggage.

Things to Do Within 15 Minutes of the Kelowna Airport

Short on time? You definitely don’t need to venture far from the Kelowna airport to find something fun to do. YLW is a pretty small airport, so getting in and out is quick and easy, especially compared to bigger airports where simply leaving the terminal feels like it takes hours.

Within about 15 minutes of the airport, you can visit local wineries, go hiking, get something delicious to eat, or squeeze in a little Okanagan sightseeing before your next flight.

If you only have a few hours between flights, I’d stick to this list. You’ll get to actually enjoy your layover without spending the entire time checking your watch and panicking about getting back to the airport.

Outdoor Stops & Fun Activities

• Kangaroo Creek Farm: Yes, there really is a kangaroo farm just down the road from the Kelowna airport! You can meet kangaroos, wallabies, capybaras, parrots, and plenty of other animals. It’s one of the quirkiest things to do in Kelowna, and definitely not how most people expect to spend an airport layover.
• Mill Creek Regional Park: If you want to get outside, Mill Creek is one of my favourite quick hikes near the Kelowna airport. The main trail follows the creek through the forest to a small waterfall, or you can keep going to find a few bigger waterfalls if you have more time (and don’t mind a bit of a scramble!).
• KF Centre for Excellence: This spot feels particularly appropriate for a layover! The KF Centre for Excellence is an aviation museum right beside the airport, with rare aircraft and interactive exhibits inside a building shaped like an airplane wing. There’s also a café overlooking the runway, and you can actually walk here from the airport terminal.
• Quail Ridge Linear Park: Just across the highway from YLW, this easy trail winds through the ponderosa pines and connects with several other trails if you want to make your walk a little longer. It’s very close to the airport, but you’ll need a vehicle to quickly get here.
• Energyplex: If the weather isn’t cooperating, Energyplex is a huge indoor activity centre with climbing, trampolines, and plenty of ways for your kiddos to burn some energy before getting back on the plane.

Where to Eat & Drink on Your Layover

• Gulfstream: Right across the highway from the Kelowna airport inside the Four Points hotel, Gulfstream is one of the easiest places to grab a proper sit-down meal during a layover. The hotel also has a free airport shuttle, so you don’t need to worry about finding a ride. If you’re hungry, get the beef dip. It’s SO good!
• Kaya Sushi: Also just a few steps from the Four Points hotel, Kaya is a great option if you’re wanting sushi. It’s fresh, quick, and close enough to the airport that you can easily squeeze in a meal during a shorter layover.
• Airport Village Plaza: Just a couple of minutes from YLW (you could walk here), Airport Village has a bunch of quick options if you don’t have time for a full meal. Grab a pizza from DunnEnzies, pick up some snacks at Nester’s Market, or stop for a coffee before heading back to the airport.
• Ancient Hill Winery: Yep, you can go wine tasting on your Kelowna airport layover! Ancient Hill is a small, family-run winery just a few minutes from YLW, where you can enjoy a wine flight and charcuterie overlooking the vineyards. Watching the planes take off over the vines is pretty cool, too.
• Upside Cidery: One of my favourite stops near the airport, especially on a sunny day. Upside makes organic cider and really good wood-fired pizza, plus there’s a rooftop patio where you can hang out with a cider and enjoy the Okanagan sunshine.
• Britannia Brewing: Just a few minutes up the highway in Lake Country, Britannia is an easy spot to grab a craft beer and something to eat before your flight. It’s casual and relaxed, and close enough to YLW that you won’t have to venture far.

Things to Do Within 30 Minutes of the Kelowna Airport

Got a little more time? With a few extra hours between flights, you can venture further from the Kelowna airport and see a lot more of the city. Downtown Kelowna, Okanagan Lake, beaches, hiking trails, and plenty of wineries are all within reach.

But here’s my local warning: Kelowna traffic can be wildly unpredictable, especially in the summer. Downtown might be 20 minutes from the airport when the roads are quiet, but that same drive can easily take 40 minutes (or more) during rush hour, which is roughly 7–8am and 3–6pm.

Give yourself way more time than you think you need to get back to YLW. You’ll still need to go through security again, and sprinting through the airport is probably not the Kelowna adventure you had in mind.

• Downtown Kelowna Waterfront: If it’s your first time in Kelowna, downtown is an easy way to see a lot in a short amount of time. Walk along the waterfront boardwalk, wander through the shops downtown, or grab a spot on the beach beside Okanagan Lake. In the summer, you can even rent a paddleboard or kayak right by the marina and get out on the lake.
• Knox Mountain Park: If I had to pick one hike for a quick taste of Kelowna, Knox Mountain would be pretty high on my list. It’s our go-to hiking spot right beside downtown, with some of the best views over Kelowna and Okanagan Lake. Apex Trail takes less than an hour for most people, but be warned: it’s short and STEEP!
• Wine Touring in East Kelowna: You’re in the Okanagan, so squeezing a winery into your layover just feels right. East Kelowna wineries like Tantalus, Summerhill, and Priest Creek are all within about 30 minutes of the airport. You could easily visit one or two for a tasting before heading back to YLW.
• Kelowna Brewing & Cider Scene: Not a wine person? Kelowna has a great craft beer and cider scene, too. Jackknife and Red Bird are two of my favourites (get the pizza at either!), or head out to Scenic Road for a cider surrounded by orchards.
• Mission Creek Greenway: This 16 km walking and biking trail follows Mission Creek through Kelowna, but you definitely don’t need to tackle the whole thing. There are plenty of places to hop on for a short walk and it’s an easy way to stretch your legs between flights.
• Orchard & Fruit Stands: If you’re visiting in the summer or early fall, keep an eye out for roadside fruit stands. Depending on the season, you’ll find Okanagan cherries, peaches, apples, and other locally grown fruit. Grab a bag for the road (or your next flight!). It doesn’t get much more Okanagan than that.

What To Do on Your Layover if You Don’t Want to Leave the Airport

Not every layover needs to turn into an adventure. If you don’t have enough time to leave (or you just can’t be bothered), there are still a few things to do at the Kelowna airport while you wait for your next flight.

YLW recently got a pretty major upgrade, with a brand-new departures lounge and security area opening in 2026. It’s still a relatively small airport though, so you’ll probably stumble across most of these options just by wandering around. And really, one of the perks of a small airport is that you’re never that far from your gate.

• Grab a Local Beer at Ellison Field Taphouse: The new departures lounge has seriously stepped up YLW’s food scene. Ellison Field Taphouse Kitchen & Bar has local BC craft beer and comfort food. It’s a pretty great place to kill some time before a flight. It even won Airport Bar or Pub of the Year at the 2026 Airport Food & Beverage Awards!
• Try Some Okanagan Wine at Vintners Exchange: Didn’t have enough time to squeeze a winery into your Kelowna layover? That’s okay! You can still get a little taste of the Okanagan without leaving the airport. Okanagan Vintners Exchange Gastrobar has local wines, including bottles from Mission Hill and CedarCreek, alongside a food menu inspired by the region.
• Grab a Coffee or Pastry: YLW also has some genuinely good local options for a quick coffee or snack. Coffee Caravan serves Bright Jenny Coffee and baked goods, while the Sandrine French Pastry & Chocolate ATM is stocked daily with pastries, macarons, sandwiches, cakes, and other treats. Both Bright Jenny and Sandrine are local Kelowna gems, so I love that you can try them right inside the airport.
• Grab Something Quick to Eat: If you don’t have time to sit down, there’s also a Subway in the departures lounge. Not exactly an exciting Kelowna experience, but sometimes you just need a sandwich before getting on a plane!
• Family Adventure Zone: Travelling with kids? Look for the tree-fort-inspired play area that has a slide and reading nook. It’s a good spot to burn off some energy before everyone has to sit still on another flight.
• Enjoy the Airport Views: One of the best parts of the expanded departures lounge is simply having more room to hang out. YLW has huge windows looking out over the runway, valley, and surrounding mountains, so grab a coffee (or a glass of Okanagan wine) and watch the planes come and go.
• Browse the Shops: YLW still isn’t exactly a shopping destination, but you’ll find a few places to pick up travel essentials, gifts, and local Okanagan products before your flight.

Where to Stay in Kelowna

Did your Kelowna layover turn into an overnight stay? You’ve got two main options: stay near the airport for maximum convenience, or head downtown and turn that layover into a mini Kelowna vacation.

• Four Points by Sheraton Kelowna Airport: If you have an early flight the next morning, this would be my pick. It’s literally across the highway from YLW, there’s a free airport shuttle, and the rooms are comfortable. You can also grab dinner or a drink at Gulfstream without having to go anywhere else.
• Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton: Another super convenient option near the Kelowna airport. It’s only a few minutes from YLW and has a free airport shuttle, an indoor pool, and free breakfast. There are also several restaurants within walking distance.
• Downtown Kelowna Hotels: If you have most of the evening (or better yet, a full day), I’d stay downtown instead. You’ll be able to walk to Okanagan Lake, the waterfront, beaches, breweries, and tons of restaurants. Splurge on a lakefront stay at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Grand or The Royal Kelowna, go colourful and quirky at Hotel Zed, or save a little money at the Royal Anne Hotel right on Bernard Avenue.
• Stay in Lake Country: Lake Country is actually closer to YLW than downtown Kelowna, so don’t rule it out! It’s a great option if you’d rather spend your extra time visiting wineries, wandering through orchards, or enjoying the lake. You’ll still be only about 15 minutes from the airport, which makes that early morning flight a lot less painful.

Getting Around Kelowna During Your Layover

YLW itself is small and really easy to navigate, but getting from the Kelowna airport is another story. We don’t have a train or subway connecting the airport with downtown, so you’ll need to drive, grab a ride, or take the bus.

• Taxi & Rideshare: This is by far the easiest option for a short Kelowna layover. Taxis, Uber, and Uride all pick up at YLW, and you can be at most of the places on this list within 15–30 minutes (traffic permitting!).
• Bus: Public transit does run between YLW and other parts of Kelowna, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you only have a few hours. Depending on where you’re going and your connections, it can take quite a while. Check Kelowna Regional Transit for current routes, fares, and schedules.
• Rental Cars: If your layover is long enough to turn into a full day of exploring, renting a car gives you way more freedom. All the major rental car companies are available at YLW, and having your own wheels makes it much easier to reach wineries, hiking trails, Lake Country, and other spots outside downtown. For a two or three-hour layover though? I wouldn’t bother.

A Few Local Tips Before You Head Out

• Don’t underestimate Kelowna traffic: Highway 97 is the main road between YLW and Kelowna, and traffic can get BAD, especially during the summer and around rush hour. Downtown might be 20 minutes away when it’s quiet and 40+ minutes when it’s not. And I’ll warn you now, Kelowna drivers can be a little intense. Running red lights and aggressive driving are unfortunately pretty common, and it’s genuinely one of my least favourite things about living here. Take your time, leave yourself lots of wiggle room, and don’t let the person riding your bumper stress you out!
• Give yourself plenty of time to get back to YLW: Remember, you’ll need enough time to drive back to the airport, get through security again, and be at your gate before boarding. YLW is small and security is often pretty quick, but I’d much rather spend an extra 20 minutes sitting at the gate than watch my plane take off without me.
• Pack light if you’re leaving the airport: YLW doesn’t have luggage storage, so anything you brought with you is coming along for the adventure. If you know you have a long layover in Kelowna, keeping your carry-on light will make exploring a whole lot easier.

Make the Most of Your Kelowna Layover

A layover in Kelowna definitely doesn’t have to mean sitting around the airport waiting for your next flight. Even with just a few hours, you can squeeze in a hike, visit a winery, cuddle a kangaroo, grab some great local food, or get your first glimpse of Okanagan Lake.

I’ve lived in Kelowna for most of my life, and I still think it’s pretty cool that we have all of this within such a short drive of the airport. Just give yourself plenty of time to get back to YLW (seriously, don’t underestimate that traffic!).

And if your schedule is flexible, consider staying a little longer. A layover is a great introduction to Kelowna, but there’s SO much more to see once you get beyond the airport.
