Camping on the Gulf Islands

Sure, there are plenty of cozy hotels and lodges in the Gulf Islands, but if you really want to dive into the natural beauty of the place, camping is the way to go!

I remember the first time I camped there—my family snagged a spot right by the beach and waking up to the sound of waves gently lapping at the shore was so magical. There’s something about being surrounded by nature that you just can’t beat.

Whether you’re booking a campsite or going for a wilder, off-the-grid experience, camping here lets you feel truly connected to the land. So, pack up the tent and get ready for awesome outdoor adventure!

Camping Options

  • Pender Island camping is very popular—and for good reason! The island is packed with stunning nature and has some seriously gorgeous viewpoints that are totally worth the hike. Trust me, you don’t want to miss those views!
  • But if you’re like me and sometimes need a little balance between nature and civilization, Salt Spring Island might be more your style. It’s the busiest of the Gulf Islands and has plenty of restaurants and shops. It’s perfect for when you’ve had your fill of wilderness and are craving a good meal or a bit of exploring in town!

Both islands have their own vibe, so it really depends on what kind of adventure you’re after.

Wildlife & Natural Surroundings

I know I’ve been going on and on about the views, but camping in the Gulf Islands is about so much more than just scenery. It’s also about those little moments that make your adventure unforgettable — like seeing some cute wildlife!

Imagine this: you’re enjoying your morning coffee and a group of deer just casually wanders through your campsite like it’s no big deal. Or maybe you’re relaxing around the campfire and suddenly you hear the unmistakable call of eagles soaring overhead. And if the ocean’s in sight, keep your eyes peeled—you might just spot playful otters splashing around or, if you’re really lucky, a pod of whales passing by! It’s like nature’s putting on a show just for you.

That’s the kind of magic that makes the Gulf Islands such a special place to camp. So, why wait? Pack your bags and get ready for a wildlife-filled camping adventure in one of BC’s most enchanting spots! You won’t regret it.

Hiking on the Gulf Islands

If you ask me, one of the absolute best ways to explore the Gulf Islands is by hitting the trails! Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to stretch your legs, there’s something for everyone. From laid-back strolls where you can soak in the scenery at your own pace to tougher hikes that’ll really get your heart pumping, the Gulf Islands have you covered.

Hiking here is hands down one of the best ways to experience the beauty of BC. The trails weave through lush forests and lead you to some seriously jaw-dropping viewpoints. And when you need to catch your breath, just take a minute to stare out over the endless ocean—it’s one of those “wow” moments that makes hiking here so special. You’ll totally get why I can’t stop talking about it!

Recommended Hikes

All the Gulf Islands have some pretty awesome trails, but Galiano Island is hands down one of my absolute favourites for hiking!

  • Bodega Ridge Trail is a must-do—it’s got fantastic views and tons of wildlife-spotting opportunities, and the best part? It’s not too tough, so you can really enjoy the scenery without feeling wiped out.
  • If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, Mount Galiano is definitely worth the climb. On a clear day, the view from the top is out of this world! Seriously, if you’re heading to Galiano Island, don’t miss it.

Preparing for Your Hikes

Before you head out on any hike, it’s always a good idea to make sure you’re prepared—trust me, nothing ruins a great trail day faster than realizing you forgot something important halfway through! First things first, make sure you’ve got the essentials. Water is a must to stay hydrated, especially on those longer hikes, and don’t forget some snacks to keep your energy up during the climb (because let’s face it, hiking snacks are half the fun!).

If you’re missing any gear, swing by REI or MEC beforehand to stock up. And, of course, don’t leave home without your camera or phone! The Gulf Islands are ridiculously beautiful and you’ll definitely want to remember the views and wildlife encounters.

So, pack smart, grab your gear, and hit the trails!

Biking on the Gulf Islands

If you want to speed things up a bit (hehe, see what I did there?) and make your adventure even more fun, renting a bike is definitely the way to go! The Gulf Islands are great for bikers and the range of trails are impressive. Whether you’re just cruising along for a scenic ride or ready to tackle something more challenging, there’s something for everyone.

Imagine pedaling along these gorgeous routes with the ocean on one side and lush forests on the other. It’s an awesome way to explore at your own pace and cover more ground while soaking in the beauty that’s everywhere.

Plus, you never know what kind of wildlife you might spot along the way—eagles, deer, or maybe even a curious otter! I always feel like biking gives you a different perspective of the islands and you can stop whenever you find a hidden gem or need a break to take in the view (or just snack on some trail mix because, let’s be honest, it’s essential).

So, if you’re up for a little extra adventure and want to feel the breeze as you ride, hop on a bike and hit the trails!

Rent a Bike

Renting a bike? No worries if you didn’t pack your own—there are plenty of local shops all over the Gulf Islands that offer bike rentals! The rental shops are awesome; they’ll hook you up with everything you need and before long you’ll be out exploring.

Where to Bike

If you’re looking for a great spot to start cycling in the Gulf Islands, Mayne Island is a great pick! It’s perfect if you’re in the mood for a more laid-back ride—there’s not too much elevation to deal with and the road network is short enough that you can cover a lot of ground without feeling too tired.

That being said, if you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, the other islands have some awesome biking options, too. Sure, the elevation can get a little steeper, but the views are totally worth it! You’ll be rewarded with incredible sights whether you’re riding along the coastline or winding your way through forested paths.

You can stick to the paved roads for a chill ride or if you’re feeling adventurous, grab a mountain bike and hit some of the off-road trails. I’ve attempted both, and I’ve got to say, there’s something pretty cool about zipping through the woods on a mountain bike (even if you suck). You feel like you’re really getting into the heart of the island.

Whatever your biking style, the Gulf Islands are packed with trails that will make you want to hop on your bike and explore!

Kayaking the Gulf Islands

You can’t talk about the Gulf Islands without mentioning one of my favourite ways to explore—by water! There’s just something magical about gliding through the calm sea with nothing but the quiet splash of your paddle and the sounds of wildlife around you. It’s such an incredible way to connect with BC’s natural beauty, and honestly, it’s one of the most peaceful experiences you’ll ever have.

Whether you’re an experienced kayaker or just testing the waters (pun totally intended), the Gulf Islands have something for everyone. And don’t worry if you’re new to paddling—there are plenty of mellow spots to get the hang of it before you take on more adventurous routes.

So if you’re up for an adventure that’s as relaxing as it is exciting, grab a paddle and hit the water! You won’t regret it!

Kayak Rentals & Tours

No need to worry if you don’t have your own kayak—you can easily rent one from the many awesome rental companies based on most of the islands! I’ve rented kayaks a few times and it’s such a great way to explore BC’s stunning coastline.

And if you’re up for a bigger adventure, you can even join a multi-day kayak tour to explore several islands in one go. I’ve always loved the idea of spending a few days paddling from island to island, camping along the way, and really getting immersed in the area.

With a guided tour, local experts will take you to secret coves and hidden spots that only the locals know about. It’s such a unique way to see the Gulf Islands, and honestly, those multi-day trips are on my bucket list!

Golfing on the Gulf Islands

Okay, I’ll admit—I’m not a huge golfer, but I know plenty of people who are, so I had to include this! If you’re into golf, you’re in for a treat because the Gulf Islands have some pretty awesome courses. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, there’s a great variety of golf courses that offer a great mix of challenge and beauty.

From the more challenging courses that’ll test your skills to easier, more laid-back fairways, there’s something for every level of golfer. Arbutus Ridge, with its stunning views overlooking the islands, and Pender Island Golf and Country Club are a couple of the top spots that golfers rave about. And even if I’m not big into golf, I can totally appreciate those views!

Plus, some of these courses even have on-site accommodations so you can stay right in the middle of the action. Or, if you prefer, there are hotels and campsites nearby to make your stay even more flexible. If golf is your thing, the Gulf Islands have you covered!

Sailing the Gulf Islands

While I haven’t been sailing myself yet, it seems like an absolute blast! Sailing is super popular in the Gulf Islands and whether you’ve got your own boat or decide to charter a yacht, you’ll get an incredible chance to explore the islands from a totally new perspective.

As you navigate through the islands, the views are breathtaking—think dense forests, rugged shorelines, and, if you’re lucky, some marine wildlife like seals, sea lions, otters, and even orcas! Gabriola Island is a favourite spot for sailing and I’ve heard the sailing opportunities there are top-notch.

There are plenty of spots to anchor, too, from cozy little coves to fully equipped marinas. Whether you’re stopping for the night or just taking a break to explore, there’s always something new to see.

And if you’re new to sailing (like I would be!), the Gulf Islands are a great place to learn. The sheltered waters are incredibly forgiving. But if you’re not ready to captain a boat yourself, you can always hop on a chartered tour. These tours let you kick back and soak in the stunning views without having to worry about any of the logistics.

Whether you’re gliding past the shores of Salt Spring Island or anchoring in a quiet bay on Galiano Island, sailing through the Gulf Islands is definitely one of the most unforgettable ways to experience British Columbia!

Cider Tasting on the Gulf Islands

As you explore Vancouver, Victoria, and the hidden gems of the Gulf Islands, there’s one thing you absolutely have to do if you really want to dive into the local culture—cider tasting! And let’s be real, after all that adventuring, kicking back with a cold cider is the perfect way to relax.

I’m a big fan of local ciders and the Gulf Islands have a booming cider scene you don’t want to miss. There are orchards and cideries popping up all over the islands and each has its own unique blends and charm. Trust me, it’s more than just a tasting—it’s an experience.

I always recommend setting aside a day (or two!) to tour a few of the cideries. Salt Spring Island is especially popular for cider tasting and it’s totally worth the trip. Each cidery has its own vibe that reflects the character of the island it’s on, and pairing those crisp, refreshing ciders with some local cuisine just makes the whole experience unforgettable.

So, if you love cider, don’t miss out on this deliciously laid-back side of the Gulf Islands!

It’s Time to Explore the Gulf Islands

So, have I convinced you to explore the Gulf Islands yet? I really hope so! This place is absolutely gorgeous and whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, biking, golfing, or just relaxing with a cider in hand (yes, please!), there’s something here for everyone.

I’ve fallen in love with these islands and once you start exploring, you’ll see why. The mix of adventure, stunning views, and laid-back island vibes makes it impossible not to have a great time.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and get ready to make some unforgettable memories in one of the most beautiful spots in British Columbia! You won’t regret it!
